My knitting is apparently cursed right now. I thought I'd have to use one more skein on my Faroese shawl to give it an exceptionally good, long drape, down to fingetip length, at least - this because the pattern model used about 800 yards of yarn, and I'm now at about 1000. The model must have been for a midget! It isn't even long enough to reach my wrists - I'm going to need to get 3-4 more 220 yard skeins to get it to the length I want. You see, I'm hoping to wear this in all but the most bitter weather, that's why I'm doing it in garter stitch, to get a nice thick fabric. It's useless if it's too short. Gah. I've been working on this along for about a fortnight now, and am sick unto death of it. I can't start the Icelandic shawl I want until I order two wheels of black unspun, can't dye the wool I have for my slippers until I manage to find unsweetened kool-aid packets, and don't really have yarn suited to any other patterns I have on hand. Gah. Plus, when I put the shawl aside last night, every other knitting related thing I picked up turned out wrong, from yarn breaking in the wrong place to my not being able to figure out the pattern for a cowl called a 'smoke ring' . Gah.

I may set out a saucer of milk for the knitting faeries.

That must be going around. I spent a good part of yesterday working on a sock until I came to the sad conclusion at about 11:30 that my gague was way off and there was no way it would ever fit my foot. Hours of work, frogged in a mere instant.

I've since recast on larger needles and higher stitch count, so hopefully breakthroughs are right around the corner. ;)

I've yet to encounter the cursed project ...

though I've certainly abandoned my fair share ... and seem to have experience the "curse of the row I can't knit right for the life of me" just this evening ... un-knit the same *bleeping* row 3.5 times to fix errors.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing the Icelandic shawl (the Faroese one, too, but I know what to visualize when I think of the Icelandic one).

P.S. ...

I've decided I *must* give something knitted to my Dad & brother after all ... and having accomplished Fuzzy Feet for myself, I know there's not much I could do that would be simpler, token hand-made gift though it may be.

All of which is to say ... I need to head back to Downtown Yarns for some Brown Sheep ... any interest?

I just happen to need to go there to pick up more Cascade for the shawl That Will Not End! I'm not quite sure when I'll be able too - have to look at the budget.

I'm also quite interested in seeing the shops by you (I just realized I had spaced getting back to you on that), although I'm only in the market for patterns right now - did you get Folk Vests there?

Fair warning ...

the shops by me are interesting, and I've rather befriended the owner and (different person) manager of the Woolgathering on 84th Street ... but they're not the place to go for a bargain.

Never having had a point of comparison, I thought nothing of their prices ... until after purchasing the Cascade 220 for $7/skein at DY, I realized they're charning $14/skein!!!!, and for a much reduced selection of colors ...

Have never bought books there ... I did pick up the Fiber Trends "Evening Shrug" pattern there, but otherwise books have been purchased online or through major retailers (like Barnes & Noble).
