There are many things I deeply hate about the co-op we live in, from the attitudes of some of my neighbors, to the wonky hot water heater, seasonal infestations, and comedic repairs. One thing, however, fills me with fondness every November 4th. I live on the fourth floor. I vote on the first floor.
So I popped some laundry in at 10am, and got in line, having waited to give all the people voting before work a chance to cycle through. While there were only three people ahead of me that was still more than I'd ever had, and several carloads of families were right behind me (three different districts all vote in my building, one machine each). I thanked the poll workers as is my habit - my mother is working the polls in her district today, as she's done for years now, and stepped into the booth. I gave myself a moment to linger with my hand on the lever, marveling that it has come to this.
Yes we can? No. Yes, we must. Yes, we will. Now the work begins.
