May. 26th, 2004 06:41 pmI'm going to try and get back into the habit of writing here regularly, even if it means I just blather about inanities. Perhaps that will help unstick me from this mental rut I'm in - my mind is as active as ever, but in a sort of soft way, where words are unformed, loose, concepts move in an undefined state. Hmm. I wonder if synaesthesia has upswings and downswings, like moods? That might help explain the way my mind is behaving right now.
The first strawberry was plucked and eaten off the windowsill yesterday. A tiny thing, not very sweet, but still good. Sir says the sugar content is ruled by how warm it gets, and the days have been cool, except for one or two hot ones. There are plenty of baby berries yet to ripen, and the farmer's market is selling flats of six plants for 5$. I'll be picking up a flat, but I need to get more pots yet. The tomato plant is about four feets tall, I've trained it to twine through a lace shawl I use as a curtain. No tomatos yet, but being indoors a late harvest won't be a problem. The citrus trees arrived a couple of days ago, tiny things, I can see why they won't fruit for a couple of years yet. The strawberry guava, pomegranete, and blueberry bush will arrive soon.
I am proving to not be my father's daughter when it comes to fish, and this is a good thing. The three fantails are doing fine, and getting large. I love looking at the way light plays off them - so do the cats. I call the tank the "Feline Food Network", but so far they've behaved themselves.
The unexpected has happened, and it's very, very unwelcome. My joint disorder has begun to affect my hands severely, the knuckles at the base of my fingers swell, and knitting, spinning , or any other type of needlework has become difficult, pushing me far back on my projects. Holding writing or drawing tools has become painful too. I'm getting more reading done, but still....It's a hard thing. Sir ordered a hand strengthening device for me, since building the muscles in my thighs helps keep my knees in place, the same might be true of my hands, but it's almost laughable. If I work on my hand strength, I can't knit, I've used up my pain-free time on that. If I don't, I may never get them into better condition. Heh.
Honestly, it really bothers me. Sometimes even my rings feel heavy, and I have to slip them off. Most of the rings I wear are my mothers, because her hands are in such bad condition she simply can't wear rings. My hands are my life, and I get so much pleasure out of using them....words fail.
Ah, well. Somehow I'll find a way around this.

Date: 2004-05-27 06:54 am (UTC)You've given your cats fish to watch; we've got a birdfeeder on the fire escape. We're lucky on our block -- very little in the way of pigeons and very much in the way of assorted small birds; even a cardinal has been spotted.
Sorry to hear about your hands; hope the device does its job and you can get back to the things you love doing.

Date: 2004-05-27 10:27 am (UTC)I'm sorry about your hands; I hope the device works. I used to work with a school librarian who also was a professional harpist. She played freelance with orchestras that couldn't afford a full-time harpist; she also taught harp. And she had problems with her hands. I remember she had something that was like silly putty -- but stronger -- that she was told to play with to help strengthen her hands. There was something else she did; I'll email you when I remember it! :)
We planted some herbs, and Ian used some of the coriander two nights ago with dinner. I want to plant more; I may buy some more this weekend. There's some ginger mint and pineapple mint I'm interested in.
Ian has a fish tank up at his cousin's house, well, in the garage. We've been thinking of getting it back and placing it on the hearth -- kitty TV indeed. :)

Date: 2004-05-27 05:20 pm (UTC)im sorry about your pain. i have now incorporated bikram yoga into my weekly practice and it involves a lot of gripwork, which is supposed to prevent/help relieve joint pain/arthritis in the hands, and there are several other poses as well to work through other joints throughout the body. i know you do yoga...wonder if you could see about specific poses that deal with joint pain...?
